By Tim Bryce

Recently I wrote a paper on the general state of craftsmanship which was geared more for public consumption as opposed to any specific industry. To my way of thinking, craftsmanship is a universal concept that touches all industries, regardless if they are product or service related. This resulted in a flurry of e-mails to me questioning how it pertains to specific types of work, including Business Systems Analysis (BSA) which, of course, is applicable but I question whether we have truly realized craftsmanship in this field.

From the outset, let me say unequivocally that BSA is not a new concept and has been with us for a long time, actually predating the modern computer era of the 20th century. Prior to this, companies had formal “Systems & Procedures” departments with analysts focusing on streamlining business processes and primarily using paper and manual procedures. As tabulating and other office equipment emerged, they were responsible for their integration into the business. But as computers were introduced, a new function was devised that greatly impacted the future of analysts, namely programmers. Slowly but surely analysts were replaced by programmers. By the end of the Structured Programming/CASE mania of the 1980’s and 90’s, BSA was phased out almost to the point of extinction. In other words, companies were more concerned with programming as opposed to grappling with enterprise-wide systems. Consequently, systems were attacked in piecemeal, usually one program at a time, which resulted in fragmented and disjointed systems, erroneous information, and redundancy in terms of data resources and work effort. Slowly, companies began to realize that a higher level person was needed who understood the business and could engineer integrated systems to serve it. Hence, the rebirth of the Business Systems Analyst as we understand it today.

Several of today’s BSA’s came up through the ranks of programming and are actually programmers in sheep’s clothing, and tend to see things only from a computing point of view. However, there are many others whose roots can be traced to today’s business schools. I view a true Business Systems Analyst as the intermediary between the end-users and the programming staff. This means they have the ability to understand both business and technical concepts and communicate them effectively with both the end-users and the programmers. In other words, one of the key roles the analyst plays is that of translator.

THE ROLE OF CRAFTSMANSHIP

In my article, I defined craftsmanship as…

“The practice and pursuit of excellence in building/delivering superior work products by workers.”

By this definition, craftsmanship and quality are not synonymous. Whereas quality is primarily concerned with zero defects, craftsmanship implies a human trait in “pursuit of excellence.” To better describe the concept, I came up with the following formula:

“Craftsmanship = (Knowledge + Experience + Attitude) X Success”

This itemizes the variables associated with craftsmanship. Before we discuss “Knowledge,” let’s consider the others first. “Experience” means the worker has been able to apply the knowledge he/she has learned, not just once, but repetitively. “Attitude” addresses the person’s sense of professionalism and dedication to his/her craft, that they possess an intellectual curiosity and continually strives for improvement. And “Success” means the worker has demonstrated he/she can produce products to the satisfaction of both the client and the company he/she works for, not just once but routinely. Regardless of the person’s knowledge, experience and attitude, if the worker cannot successfully deliver the work product, it is for naught.

To me, the “knowledge” variable is the Achilles’ heel to craftsmanship in Business Systems Analysis. As mentioned earlier, BSA is not a new concept, but was almost made extinct. Fortunately, it is beginning to rebound and, as part of its resurrection, the industry is reinventing systems theory with programming muddying the waters. For example, how BSA is taught at the college level is certainly not uniform. Sometimes it is taught in the business schools and others in the computer science schools. Further, how one professor may teach it will not be the same as the next. I have seen this not just in this country but overseas as well. In other words, BSA is not yet a teachable science. To qualify as a science, there needs to be a governing body of knowledge consisting of proven and accepted concepts and principles. This includes a standardization of terms in order to avoid a “Tower of Babel” effect. Unfortunately, uniform standards are few and far between in the BSA field. To illustrate, there are numerous interpretations of what a system is, or what information is, or even data.

There are two parts to the “knowledge” variable: initial education/training, and continuous improvement. In terms of initial education/training, you can either learn BSA through the “School of Hard Knocks” or from an accredited institution. I will not digress into the specifics of what a BSA curriculum should include other than to highlight general areas:

* History of BSA.

* General business courses, including such things as general management, organizational analysis, work simplification, industrial engineering, industrial psychology, corporate law, statistics, etc.

* Communications courses; e.g., speech, persuasion, negotiation, corporate and technical writing, interviewing, etc.

* Basic math to calculate such things as return on investment and cost/benefit analysis.

* Project Management.

* Introduction to computer technology (including operations and networking).

* Principles of software design.

* Principles of data base deign.

Aside from the initial education/training, the “Knowledge” variable requires a program of continuous improvement. This can be done by attending supplemental training, by reading and researching articles and books, and active participation in trade groups, such as the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA).

As an aside, the forerunner of the IIBA was the Association for Systems Management (ASM) which went defunct back in the 1990’s (another indicator of how BSA almost became extinct).

Certification in a chosen profession is also useful for continuous improvement, but without an industry accepted body of knowledge it is pointless. And being certified does not automatically make you a craftsman, but rather it is indicative of your desire to seek further knowledge and improve yourself.

IMPLEMENTING BSA CRAFTSMANSHIP

In my earlier craftsmanship article, I described how a company should devise a suitable corporate culture to embrace craftsmanship; to summarize:

* EMPOWERMENT OF THE WORKER to make certain decisions regarding development of the work product. This involves less micromanagement and more participation by workers in the planning process. In other words, managing from the “bottom-up” as opposed to “top-down.”

* CREATION OF A MORE DISCIPLINED AND ORGANIZED WORK ENVIRONMENT promoting a more professional attitude amongst the workers. This includes a corporate position of zero tolerance in defects and inferior workmanship and the adoption of standard methodologies thereby defining best practices for building/delivering work products.

* PROMOTE A PROGRAM OF CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT to sharpen worker skills.

* ESTABLISHMENT OF THREE CLASSES OF WORKERS to denote the level of expertise, such as “Apprentices” (novices requiring training), “Intermediate” (educated and experienced, but not yet expert), and “Master” (expert craftsman).

* ESTABLISH A LINK BETWEEN WORKERS-PRODUCTS-CUSTOMERS to establish a feedback loop to judge satisfaction with a specific product and to the exact worker(s) who produced it.

This approach to implementation is just as applicable to BSA as it is to any other profession.

CONCLUSION

There are undoubtedly craftsmen in the BSA industry; people whose companies and clients have supreme confidence in their ability and trust their expertise unquestioningly. These are people who should be recognized by the industry in order to become models for others to emulate.

But the biggest problem with craftsmanship in this industry is the lack of uniform standards by which we can teach others in a consistent manner. Without such governing standards, BSA will continue to be viewed more as an art as opposed to a science, and true craftsmanship in this field will not be realized.

During the 1960’s and early 1970’s, the field of systems development was run by either a programmer or a system analyst. There were more analysts than programmers at that time yet since computing was just new in the corporate arena and there were those who could still look at systems as a whole. But there was so great a need for people who could program computers, thus the rise of programming.

Programming was so much a trend that many authors started writing books on how to boost programmer productivity, which led to the introduction of Structured Programming in the late 1970’s. Shortly thereafter, the Computer Aided Software Engineering or the CASE movement followed.

In the 1980’s, the rise of programming has led to the tremendous decline in system analysis, with trade groups slowly folding up. New job titles were introduced such as analyst/programmer and software engineer. The emphasis of the former title was more on programming, not systems analysis. At present, programmers are so much in demand in the corporate world, particularly in the Information Technology field.

Although a programmer and systems analyst may have pretty much the same scope in performing tasks, the two are still set apart by several characteristics. The programmer is more introverted and puts more focus on technology. A systems analyst, on the other hand, studies a business’s information requirements and designs system solutions that satisfy them.

Moreover, as the middleman of the programming staff, the analyst is responsible for specifying software requirements as well. Most analysts are also usually extroverted and business-minded and they should also be able to communicate well both verbally and in written in order to work effectively with the programming staff and the end-users. Additionally, they should also be able to conduct interviews, create presentations and look at things in a bigger scope.

The systems analyst knows and understands the problems encountered by end users as well the operations of the users’ department. In fact, analysts can make great candidates for top management positions. However, this has not materialized for some time now because the demand for analysts has dwindled for many years already.

Proper systems analysis plays an important role in increasing programmer productivity as analysts can provide quality specifications for application tasks. Programmers may lose valuable time without the help of systems analysts, as they may have to make second guesses as to what the end users want. As a result, this could lead to constant rewriting of software.

Simply put, programmers can improve their productivity through quality data and processing specifications that systems analysts can provide. In fact, this is even found to be even better than any available programming technique or tool there is. With good systems analysis, programming is made easier because the focus is on upfront work.

System problems cannot be completely solved with the mere use of programming techniques and tools alone – it also needs good systems analysis as well. And apart from its vital functions, good systems analysis can actually be an important factor in increasing programmer productivity too.

The fact is that there is no single, overall body that sets definitive legal rules and regulations for ethical trading for Promotional Merchandise or any other Marketplace.

By Francis George Murphy

The fact is that there is no single, overall body that sets definitive legal rules and regulations for ethical trading for Promotional Merchandise or any other Marketplace.

Every nation has their own employment and trading laws but as can be seen on a daily basis many countries ignore these laws and even turn a blind eye to appalling practices within their own borders. Corruption is endemic in many places around the globe and not just in underdeveloped nations, ethical trading is not confined to the factories and sweatshops where Promotional Clothing is often manufactured, there is as much of it going on in the boardrooms and offices as there is on the factory floor.

A company that decides to pay a bribe to win a promotional Gift contract is as unethical as the workshop owner who employs child labour to make Corporate Clothing. In general it is fair to say that the more developed a nation is, the more likely it is that their standards in relation to working practices will be higher. Although it is certainly not unheard of for stories to appear from some very developed nations in relation to poor working conditions. There is also the question of the degree of ethics. Is it fair to impose the rules and regulations of developed nations onto those countries who cannot ever hope to attain the standards and wealth that other countries enjoy?

In the 1990’s a story broke regarding the manufacture of leather footballs used as Promotional Items in India where young children were found to be stitching footballs in their village homes. The world’s press descended upon the region and within days all production had stopped with orders cancelled and manufacturers shut down. Whilst all the developing nations went home patting themselves on the back for doing such a great job the families whose entire livelihood depended upon this work began to starve. Even today some 10 years after this event there are still stories in the press relating to the same Promotional Gifts in the same regions. This perfectly demonstrates the need for co ordinated action to be taken to help factory and farm owners in assisting them towards improving the conditions under which workers carry out their duties rather than depriving them of an income.

Currently there are not many good sources of information relating to Ethical trading. Organisations such as the Economic & Social Research Society have been awarded grants to research the subject and some investment companies now offer clients the opportunity to invest in what they terms as Ethical Funds. Apart from the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) there are virtually no other authoritative sources of information for organisations that wish to begin the process of trading ethically.

Do you believe that child labor is wrong? Do you believe that children should be in school as compared to a shop making clothes that people wear? If you answered yes, to both of these, you are not alone. There are many educational institutions nationwide within our country whom have a “Sweat free Policy” with their curriculum materials as well as certain apparel. These particular institutions have adapted a “Code of Conduct for the Manufacturer of Apparel”. The apparel industry has been exposed to rampant worker abuse. A man by the name of Andrew Ross reported back in 1997 the following, “The textile and apparel industries are a showcase of horrors for the labor abuses sanctioned by the global free trade economy, where child labor, wage slavery, and employer cruelty are legion.” ~ NO SWEAT: Fashion, free trade, and the rights of garment workers, Andrew Ross, editor, 1997.

The following is some examples of apparel made in sweatshops: Sports uniforms (This includes gym uniforms); school uniforms; shoes, athletic shoes or sneakers; sweatshirts, caps, and other imprinted clothing with school’s logos; academic regalia; lab coats and staff uniforms.

What is a sweatshop? A sweatshop is a workplace which consists of systematic violations of one or more of the fundamental workers’ rights have been violated according to international law and site-of-production laws and regulations. The rights include:

Workers receiving a fair wage and benefits; Children not being subjected to working conditions that could harm them physically, psychologically, or intellectual development; Freedom from excessive work hours and forced labor, freedom from physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, and protection of workplace health and safety hazards.

A code of conduct is utilized to hold companies accountable. Most companies of today have adapted their own “Code Of Conduct”, unfortunately, company codes are often inadequate to protect the workers.

The following is a list of CEO’s and their compensation for year 1998, do keep in mind all of these CEO’s are employed by companies whom do indeed utilize sweat shops.

Millard Drexler, GAP $660 million

Michael Eisner, Disney $177 million

Floyd Hall, Kmart $ 23 million

Phil Knight, Nike $ 3 million

Paul Charron, Liz Clairborne $7 million

David Glass $ 40 million

The following are samples of starvation wages around the world.

Guatemala 37 cents an hour

El Salvador 60 cents an hour

Nicaragua 23 cents an hour

Honduras 43 cents an hour

Haiti 30 cents an hour

Mexico 50 cents an hour

China 28 cents an hour

Indonesia 20 cents an hour

Burma 4 cents an hour

Bangladesh 13-20 cents an hour

These wages are called “starvation wages”. I use to be one of those people that constantly stated that our economy can not be compared to other countries, I was innocently stating this believing that what US Companies were paying workers within these countries were fair wages within their economies, but after viewing the evidence of what the company CEO’s are making and knowing that in countries such as El Salvador as well as others, these families are not making enough to even raise their families, I have definitely sustained a change of heart.

I do feel our own economy needs a serious face lift, but why can we not be humane about it? I feel that consumers have more power than they even know. I feel that consumers should hold corporations accountable to respect the rights of workers, but not only as workers, but as human beings and they need to be paid a “living” wage, not a “starvation” wage.

I do not feel we should boycott these corporations, for why should we? We enjoy their products, the reality here is that we enjoy purchasing these items, besides, boycotting these corporations would only hurt jobs in developing countries. I support jobs for developing countries, but I feel that consumers should want the people of those countries to have jobs with dignity and fair wages. I believe the CEO’s of these huge corporations could spare some money to ensure the people whom are indeed aiding in their wealth can work with dignity and support their families, and if the CEO’s refuse? The consumers should demand fair wages. What if these children were our own children? Our own families? This places a different perspective on things for every child performing these tasks is someone’s son/daughter or someone’s mother/father. This truly places a realistic perspective on this most often ignored epidemic.

For those of you whom are truly passionate about this issue, I have included some links that will educate you on this topic as well as direct you to organizations whom are striving to end “starvation wages”.

Dish satellites are used all over the world to provide a variety of channels for television viewing. Cables are used to connect a television with a personal dish satellite or with a satellite used by a service provider. Dish satellites use air space to connect to remote signals and in turn, relay them for viewing. However, a viewer may never pay attention to the satellite unless transmission is interrupted.

At times, it is quite frustrating to switch on a television only to watch a blinking screen. In such cases, people can try to tune personal dish satellites. In tuning a small dish satellite, it is important to maintain an accurate compass direction. However, this is just a method to try and eliminate the problem. If channels are still unavailable for viewing the dish satellite system may require repairing.

Before calling a technician, it is also important to check the receiver menu. Once in a while, this helps conclude if odd or even transponders are missing. If any of these are not responding, the centralized power source should be checked. Dish satellite owners may try to disconnect the receiver and LNB for a few minutes and then reconnect. Occasionally, this can solve the problem. Loss of signal may also occur due to heavy rainfall. In such a case it is essential to adjust the dish to receive signals.

The reason a dish satellite owner needs to check these minor adjustments is because the entire dish satellite system works as a unit. It is also advisable to check the cable wire for splinters or cracks. If these adjustments still do not permit viewing the channels, then the satellite dish system may need repairs.

Before choosing a specialized technician for repairs, it is advisable to discuss with friends and family members who have had similar experiences. People may also fill an online application to contact a technician. It is important to carry out routine maintenance of satellite dish systems, as recommended by the manufacturer. Unfortunately, some of the time, repairs will not be an option and the dish will need to be replaced.

Thinking is such a natural process that people do not often give much thought to it. However the importance of strategic thinking is critical for business success and this article aims to shed some light on the topic. In order to better understand strategic thinking a logical starting point would be to define “Thinking”:

“Thinking may be described as the mental process of forming models in our mind. These models become frameworks around which perceptions are formed of current situations and drive further consideration of a wide range of challenges, questions, objectives and choices.”

Businesses and their leaders are challenged to perform in a crowded and competitive global environment. Remaining competitive requires organizations to keep their strategic management process dynamic, continuously learning and adaptable, taking advantage of emerging opportunities while managing risk. Strategic thinking thus becomes a key competency for leaders and managers responsible for the design and deployment of business and functional strategies.

Strategic thinking needs to be at the centre of the entire strategic management process, constantly re-evaluating, re-visiting and re-defining mental models of the business. Strategic metal models of a business whether formally defined or not, frame a business and limit creative thought based on assumptions about:

How the business is organized and manages the deployment of its resources to compete, generate revenue and deliver value in the market;

How competitors behave, react and are likely to evolve in the market;

How suppliers and complementary business partners can and should support the business;

How customers respond, what they value and needs and wants are met.

A process to systematically drive strategic thinking is required within any organization. A simple three step process that may be used at an individual or group level for improved strategic thinking is to:

Define the strategic business mental models and its underlying assumptions relating to the four bullet points above;

Seek information to challenge these assumptions while identifying alternative business value drivers and emerging trends;

Identify new opportunities as a result of these new business value drivers and trend

Make choices and think through high level actions that would be required to leverage these new opportunities and manage likely challenges.

Strategic thinking needs to both appreciate the current business situation and simultaneously challenge the status-quo keeping a focus on the future. The ability of leaders and managers to think strategically is a key competence that promotes integrative efforts through a focus on the big picture when making decision, working across function and locations.

By Christopher Clarke

Marketers find it extremely difficult to identify potential target markets in a global environment these days due to the highly competitive edge. However, companies prefer to enter markets with sufficient potential in terms of economic, cultural and political terms.

It is a fact that, a company cannot use the same strategy everywhere in the world. This is because of the contrasting features that prevent companies from drawing conclusions about target markets worldwide.

Factors Influencing The Selection Of Potential Target Markets In A Global Environment:

Per Capita income or Consuming Power of Customers: per capita economic growth rate determines the selection of target markets. Total population and per capita income determine aggregate consuming capacity.

Even the fastest growing countries in the world are experiencing economic slow down at present. This prompts countries to curb on imports and develop products manufactured from indigenous technology. Companies that intend to venture in to such countries may struggle to compete with their domestic counterparts. Apart from the income, other factors that determine the viability of target markets are:

Urbanization: According to statistics, the world population is around 6 billion and is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2025. The major attracting factor of this population estimate is the pace of urbanization taking place in developing countries. It has been estimated that urbanization is booming at a staggering rate across the globe.

Political, Legal and Cultural Factors: A country’s political, legal and cultural factors determine the feasibility of business. For example, Brazil, Russia, India and China have proved their potentials in International business. However, these countries have sufficient potentials to emerge as the leaders in international market, but a variety of environmental factors affect their feasibility as potential markets. Political, legal and cultural factors determine how attractive a country is for fresh entrants.

Ethnic Factors: Firms have to consider the ethnic factors of the countries before venturing in to them. Only those countries that keep ethnic harmony with the company’s products will act positively to business.

Currency Stability: The stability of the target market’s currency is an important factor. Thus, companies will face serious problems, if they are operating in a country with unstable currency.

Infrastructure: Infrastructure plays a vital role, when it comes to shipping the merchandises to target markets. The communication department of a business is also prone to this.

Specific Factors in Target Market Selection:

Apart from the above-mentioned general factors, several other industry specific factors play a crucial role in the selection of target markets, which are:

Domestic Production and Consumption: As far as the future of the product is concerned, the domestic production and consumption styles determine the long-term success of a business. If the domestic production is more, the company will find fewer chances to grow.

Nature of Competition: A mature market is dominated bay huge numbers of players and thus, it has low feasibility, as new entrants struggle a lot to compete with existing players.

Overview:

Target market decisions in international business are affected by multiple factors. Therefore, only those companies, who consider these factors, will succeed in the international market.
